Assignments are given to improve your knowledge and understanding. Tests are given to measure that knowledge and understanding.
Grades are not given. They are earned.
I will not increase your grade because you:
- Need to maintain a scholarship
- Have an internship
- Have already failed this class once
- Are graduating
- Ask nicely
- Bribe me
If you are worried about how your grade in this class will effect these or other things, you need to address the problem early. I will help you as much as I can, but the grade you get is up to you.
Scale
All of my classes assign deliverables, and each type of deliverable is assigned a percentage of the final grade. The syllabus for the class lists these percentages, but in general the exams/projects are worth more than regular homework assignments. Your final grade will be delivered as a percentage (rounded up) and converted to a letter grade according to the following:
| ≥97 | A+ |
| 93-96 | A |
| 90-92 | A- |
| 87-89 | B+ |
| 83-86 | B |
| 80-82 | B- |
| 77-79 | C+ |
| 73-76 | C |
| 70-72 | C- |
| 67-69 | D+ |
| 63-66 | D |
| 60-62 | D- |
| <60 | F |
Please Note: Some CS classes do not allow grades of “D”, any grade <70 in these classes will result in an “F”.
Please Note: Many CS classes require grades of “C” or better to move on to the next class in the sequence.
Curves
The grading scale in my class might use a curve. The purpose of the curve is not to improve the student’s grade, but instead to take into account any problems with measurement of the student’s aptitude. Whether or not a curve will be used will not be decided until all grades are in. Do not count on a curve, or ask for one.
Policies
The grading policies for my classes are quite simple:
| Make-up Exams | Not given |
| Extra Credit | None |
| Late Work | Not Accepted |
Exceptions can be made (at my discretion) for documented cases involving illness or emergency need. DO NOT:
- ask me to change an exam or due date because of conflict with another class, unless you are also asking the other professor as well (you must cc me)
- ask me to change an exam or due date after the date has passed
- ask me to give you a higher score because of anything other than a mistake in grading
- expect to do well, unless you turn your assignments in and turn them in on time
Academic Dishonesty
If you don’t do the work, you’re not getting the education you have paid for. If you let somebody else do the work for you, then you are lowering the value of not only your education but the reputation of the university and its graduates. As I received 2 of my 3 degrees from UTD, this does not make me happy.
All work you submit should be your own. Do not copy, reuse, borrow, modify, or otherwise take work (particularly code) from anyone or anyplace. If for some assignment you are allowed to reference other people’s work, be sure to attribute it properly.
If I find any hint of academic dishonesty in my classes, I will immediately refer the alleged offender(s) to the OCSC without warning.
